  He is equally critical of the NWT here, he argues that "ego eimi" may have theological significance, but at John 8:58 it is really just one of the most basic pron-noun + verb combinations there is, anything else is read into it and is outside the concern of a translator. Not that theology is is outside of concern necessarily, but that here the most straight forward method works fine, so why add to it

  Hi Nark, I thnk you are being uncharitable, read the above closer you will see that he is not saying theology is out of his concern, but is pointing out that at John 8:58 that it is not this amazing super-title at every step necessarily. You might see this point better if you give us your translation of John 14:9. Since the standard translation is ungrammatical (and it is) why let a debate-able theology be the final guide in your translation when it only leads to bad english?

  Basically, my question, why is it a dumb point to make in reference to john 8:58, but not John 14:9?

  In the narrowest context of John 8:58 "I have been" may sound as a perfectly correct translation of egô eimi, but in the largest context of the Fourth Gospel which repeatedly uses egô eimi as a Christological formula a locally awkward "I am" is the formal price to pay for the overall consistency which is theologically more important. In such cases it seems obvious that the NWT deliberately misses the forest for the trees

  Slightly related question, but yet not in some way, What do you feel about Beduhn's preferred translation of John 8:58, "I existed (or have been,) before Abraham was"...... His reasoning is as follows:

  "On the matter of word order, normal english follows the structure we all learned in elementary school: subject + verb + object or predictae phrase. The order of the Greek in John 8:58 is: predicate phrase + subject + verb. So it is the most basic step of translation to move the predicate phrase "Before Abraham came to be" (prin abraam genesthai) from the beginning of the sentence to the end, after the subject and verb. Just as we do not say "John I am" or "hungry I am" or "first in line i am", so it is not proper English to say "Before Abraham came to be I Am". Yet all of the translations we are comparing, with exception of the LB, offer precisely this sort of mangled word order." (Beduhn p.105)

  By carefully selecting passages which are poorly translated (Or overtranslated as Narkissos puts it) in the NWT, it could easily be made to come out near the bottom of a similar list.

  "overtranslation" is not mistranslation, or a case of "bias" in itself. If it conveys the thought correctly is Beduhn's aim and concern . So therefore overtranslated verses often cited here- like in the case of Phil 2:5-7 (which Beduhn agrees is needlessly wordy) still get a passing grade for it falls in the range of possible meaning.

  I hear a lot about it feeding the persecution complex, to this I disagree, most JWs I have seen react the same way, Ignore them, then when you get out of earshot make a semi-polite joke. Jws don't seem to take these types seriously. You have to take an opposer seriously to have it feed a persecution complex.

  Why don't apologists talk to each other?

  in the time i've been reading these forums i've seen a few apologists posting on threads, but what i've never seen was them interacting with each other.

  is it the same person with multiple logins, or is there some sort of code of honor that prevents them from agreeing with each other.

  is it like seeing another witness in a porno store?

  this afternoon i heard on national public radio that poet/songwriter patti smith will be inducted into the musical hall of fame later this week.

  an interview with terri gross from 1996 detailed her early life as a jehovah's witness.

  she spoke respectfully of the jws and her memory of her mother and father and early family life, but spoke candidly that she did not like the teachings and restrictions and never felt she fit in.

  we know the bible shows jesus praying to his father, but who is our father?.

  Is there a reference in WT literature that states that the Messiah is not our "Eternal Father" and "Mighty God" (or "divine hero"-LXX)? In the OT, try Is. 64:8, where YHWH is "our Father", in the NT, consider Eph 4:4-6 where God (not Christ) is the "Father of all".. Both YHWH and Christ can bear the term "Father" in their own context, just as God can be the "one" Father of the Jews, while also having Abraham be their "Father" in a another sense. (John 8:39-44)

  Jesus can be the Father of the New Covenent, and also should be noted that Is. 9:6 is thought to have an initial fulfilment back then with the Pre-Christian Jews. At least that is how they understood it. I am not sure how you state that God the Father is not still the Father of Christians (in the umltimate sense) based on a Messianic prophecy.It is sense and reference really.
